Chad Allan and The Expressions • 1965 • Shakin' All Over

Shakin' All Over is an album released in 1965 by the Canadian rock band The Guess Who. It contains their hit version of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates hit song Shakin' All Over.

Guess Who LPs titled Shakin' All Over appeared in both the US and Canada in 1965, but they weren't the same records, though some of the same tracks were included on each release. The American Shakin' All Over was issued on the Scepter label; the Canadian one came out on Quality, and has been reissued on CD, making it much more widely available outside of Canada. The one being addressed in this review is the US version, which actually drew from tracks that appeared on the group's two 1965 Canadian LPs on Quality, Shakin' All Over and Hey Ho (What You Do to Me). Aside from the title track (itself not as good as the Johnny Kidd original), the American LP titled Shakin' All Over was a rather thin effort typical of the period, padding the hit single with various covers and a few Randy Bachman originals. "Stop Teasing Me" — here presented in a milder version than the superior re-recording included on Hey Ho (What You Do to Me) — is one of the most accurate Merseybeat imitations ever waxed, but on the whole this sounds a lot closer to a harder-rocking Gerry & the Pacemakers than the group would have liked to admit a few years later. Since all of the tracks appear on the two 1965 Canadian LPs, and since those Canadian LPs have been reissued on CD, there's little reason to make an effort to find the American Shakin' All Over LP. — Richie Unterberger.

Shakin' all Over

(Johnny Kidd)

When you move in right up close to me
That's when I get the chills all over me

Quivers down my backbone
I got the shakes in my thigh bone
I got the shivers in my knee bone
Shakin' all over

Just the way you say goodnight to me
Brings the feelin' on inside of me

Quivers down my backbone
I got the shakes in my thigh bone
I got the shivers in my knee bone
Shakin' all over

Quivers down my backbone
I got the shakes in my thigh bone
I got the shivers in my knee bone
Shakin' all over

Well, you make me shake and I like it, baby
You make me shake and I like it, baby
Well, shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake

Tossin' and Turnin'

(Malou Rene)

Baby, baby, can't you see what you're doing to me?
I couldn't sleep a wink last night just a-thinking of you
Baby things weren't right I kept on tossin' and turnin'
Turnin' and tossin' tossin' and turnin' all night
I threw the blankets on the floor, turned my pillow upside down
Then I thought of you some more
And I kept on tossin' and turnin' turnin' and tossin'
Tossin' and turnin' all night
Jumped out of bed, turned on the light
Pulled down the shade went to the kitchen for a bite
Pulled up the shade, turned off the light
I jumped back into bed it was the middle of the night
The clock downstairs was striking four, couldn't get you off my mind
Heard the milkman at the door but I was tossin' and turnin'

Shot of Rhythm N' Blues

(Curtis Thompson)

A-when your hands start a-clappin'
And your fingers start a-poppin'
When your feet wanna move around

And ya start to swing and sway
And the band begins to play
With a real cool way out sound

Then ya get the "can't help-it's"
And ya can't sit down
Feel like ya wanna move 'round an 'round

Need a shot of rhythm and blues
With just a little rock n' roll on the side
Just for good measure

Need a pair of dancin' shoes
With your lover by your side
Don't you know you're gonna have a lot of pleasure

Don't you worry about a thing
You start to dance and sing
And the chill bumps come up on you

Well, the beat'll finally get you
When the beat gets you, too and
Here's the thing for you to do

I've Been Away

(Randy Bachman)

I've been away so long
Wonder where I went wrong
Spent my last years in a cell
Never ever go away again
I've been so sad and lonely
Never ever ever gonna go away again
It's a waste of time doing time
When you dind't commit a crime
It wasn't me it was my brother Bill
And I'd have to tell never gonna speak to Bill again
He's made me sad and lonely
Never ever gonna speak to brother Bill again
It was no use, they put my brother on the jury
He bribed the others 'cause he owns the local brewery
They let me out today
Brother Bill's gonna pay
No one's ever gonna speak to Bill again
Never ever gonna speak to Bill again
He'll be too cold and bony
Never ever gonna go away again
Never ever gonna go away again
Never ever gonna go away again
