Iannis Xenakis • 2008 • Electronic Works 2

«Hibiki-Hana-Ma» («Reverberation - Flower - Interval»), was composed for the 1970 Osaka World's Fair, and was created with the UPIC system, a graphical input device that Xenakis invented, using recordings of an orchestra, a biwa and a snare drum.

«Polytope De Cluny» for 8-channel tape was composed for the first Festival d'Automne in Paris in 1972, commissioned by the French Minister of Culture, Michel Guy. Set in the cavernous Roman Baths of Cluny this piece included laser lights refracted by mirrors throughout the installation carefully calculated by Xenakis and automated by computer. The music was composed independent from the visual spectacle mixing computer generated sounds with some purely instrumental (acoustic) elements on tape.
