«Shut Up and Dance», composed by Hollenbeck, is a rich, complex suite of ten mini jazz concertos dedicated to and based around each of the ten specially chosen musicians in the band (plus an overture and a piece dedicated to the whole orchestra). The interconnecting theme throughout is to explore the relationship between music, sound and movement. The project, which was gradually developed in New York, Paris, Berlin and St. Remy de Provence, covers an immense range of influences including Ellington, Weather Report, Gnawa trance, Pygmy music, minimalism and electronics. Intoxicating rhythms interweave with strong melodies, and a wide variety of sounds from a ping pong ball bouncing on the strings of a piano and computer noise, to hand clapping and melodies from PVC tubes.
